The print you choose at manufacture is the print your customer gets to enjoy for the life of the deck.

That makes your membrane manufacturer one of the most important partners in your business. It’s glued down with adhesive, and the seams between sheets are heat-welded into one waterproof surface. It’s the go-to choice for balconies, rooftop decks, and any deck that sits over living space, where a leak means damage to the room below.

The term “vinyl decking” causes some confusion, because it may also be used for vinyl composite deck boards. They’re different products that do very different jobs:

Vinyl deck membrane

Vinyl composite deck boards

Form

Continuous sheet, heat-welded seams

Individual boards with gaps between them

Water

Stops it, protecting the space below

Lets it drain through to the ground

Typical use

Balconies, rooftop decks, decks over living space

Ground-level and open-framed decks

Look

Printed wood-look, stone-look, or textured finishes

Molded or embossed board surface

In short, if the space under the deck needs to stay dry and look beautiful, it needs a vinyl deck membrane.
Every deck membrane on the market promises to keep water out. The print is where brands actually compete.

Homeowners compare a membrane to the alternatives: wood, deck boards, tile, and pavers. A wood-look deck membrane has to read as real plank from a few feet away. A stone-look deck membrane has to have the depth and variation of natural stone, without an obvious repeat across a large balcony.

Three things decide whether the print holds up its end:

Pattern quality. Realistic grain and stone detail, with a repeat that doesn’t jump out across a wide deck.

Color consistency. Every roll in a color line has to match, or seams between sheets become visible lines.

Outdoor durability. A deck membrane sits in direct sun for years. UV-stable inks and coatings keep the color from fading, so the deck still looks like the sample your customer picked.

A brand that gets these right can build a vinyl deck membrane portfolio that delights homeowners.

When you are specifying a clear or printable film, PETg and Polycarbonate (PC) are often two of the first materials considered. Both are proven options for flexible and rigid film applications. Both support printing and thermoforming. Both are used across industries ranging from packaging and signage to industrial components.

Their performance characteristics, however, are different.

The right material comes down to the demands of the application, including impact resistance, temperature exposure, cost targets, processing requirements, and optical clarity.

At i2M, we manufacture both iXon™ PETg and iXon® Polycarbonate (PC) Films in-house. That gives our team the ability to evaluate the application first and help customers determine which material is the best fit for their project.

The Quick Answer

For a cost-effective, easy-to-process film with good clarity for general-purpose applications, PETg is usually the right choice.

For applications that require high-impact resistance, performance through temperature swings, or greater structural durability, Polycarbonate (PC) is typically the better fit.

The comparison below provides a closer look at how the two materials perform.

Where PETg and Polycarbonate (PC) Are Similar

PETg and Polycarbonate (PC) share several characteristics, which is why the material decision is not always obvious:

Both offer strong optical clarity for applications where appearance matters.

Both can be thermoformed, printed, and fabricated using similar processing methods.

Both are widely used in film and sheet form across consumer, industrial, and packaging applications.

The differences become clearer when the materials are exposed to impact, heat, weather, and repeated stress.

Where They Differ

Impact Resistance and Toughness

Impact resistance is one of Polycarbonate (PC)’s strongest performance advantages. It is one of the toughest clear plastics available and can resist cracking or shattering under significant impact.

PETg provides reliable durability for general handling and everyday use. Applications involving repeated stress, drops, or high-impact conditions will typically benefit from Polycarbonate (PC)’s added toughness.

Clarity and Optical Properties

Both materials offer excellent clarity. Polycarbonate (PC) tends to maintain its performance more effectively in applications exposed to UV light or outdoor conditions when it is UV stabilized.

PETg can provide an advantage in certain gloss and finish applications where a warmer, glass-like appearance is preferred. It is also well suited for applications that do not require the higher impact or temperature performance of Polycarbonate (PC).

Cost and Processing

PETg is generally more cost-effective and easier to process at scale. This makes it a strong option for projects where budget, throughput, and processing efficiency are priorities.

Polycarbonate (PC) carries a higher material cost, but its added impact and temperature performance can justify that investment in more demanding applications.

Temperature Performance

Polycarbonate (PC) has a higher heat deflection temperature, allowing it to maintain its shape and performance in higher-temperature environments.

Applications that will experience sustained heat exposure will typically be better suited for Polycarbonate (PC).

Typical Applications

PETg is commonly used in retail packaging, point-of-purchase displays, general signage, wall coverings, financial cards, and applications where clarity, processing efficiency, and cost control are priorities.

Polycarbonate (PC) is commonly used for security and identification cards, instrument clusters, medical device panels, labels and tags, high-durability signage, and applications that must withstand rough handling or demanding conditions over time.

Selection Guide

Application

Recommended Material

Why

Retail packaging and POP displays

PETg

Cost-effective, strong clarity, easy to process

Outdoor signage with moderate exposure

Polycarbonate (PC)

Selection depends on expected impact and weather exposure

Protective glazing and machine guards

Polycarbonate (PC)

Superior impact resistance

High-heat environments

Polycarbonate (PC)

Higher heat deflection temperature

General thermoformed parts

PETg

Easier processing and lower cost

High-durability outdoor applications

Polycarbonate (PC)

Better long-term impact and UV performance

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PETg the same as Polycarbonate (PC)?

No. PETg and Polycarbonate (PC) are both clear, thermoformable plastics used in similar applications, but they have different chemical structures and performance characteristics.

Polycarbonate (PC) provides significantly greater impact resistance. PETg is generally more cost-effective and easier to process.

Which is more durable, PETg or Polycarbonate (PC)?

Polycarbonate (PC) is the more durable option for applications requiring impact resistance and long-term performance under stress.

PETg performs well in general-purpose applications but is not designed for the same level of impact or exposure to extreme environments.

Can PETg and Polycarbonate (PC) film be recycled?

Yes. Both PETg and Polycarbonate (PC) are recyclable, which can make either material worth considering when sustainability is part of the selection process.

Does Polycarbonate (PC) cost more than PETg?

Generally, yes. Polycarbonate (PC)’s added impact resistance and temperature performance typically come with a higher material cost.

PETg remains a preferred option for applications that do not require those higher performance characteristics.

Which One Is Right for You?

PETg is a strong choice for cost-efficient, general-purpose applications. Polycarbonate (PC) is better suited for projects where impact resistance and heat performance are critical.

Once the operating conditions, processing requirements, and performance expectations are defined, the right material is usually clear.

On June 11, 2026, Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling traveled from Washington D.C. to Mountain Top, Pennsylvania. He did not come to tour a Fortune 500 headquarters or a newly built facility. He came to see how a 200-person polymer film manufacturer had built something the federal government considers worth studying: a workforce development model that is changing what American manufacturing can look like.

That visit meant something to us. But more importantly, it should mean something to you as a customer.

The problem every manufacturer faces

The skilled trades pipeline in American manufacturing has been shrinking for decades. Companies that depend on offshore sourcing have felt it differently, through tariff exposure, quality variance, and lead times measured in weeks rather than days. But domestic manufacturers face their own version of the same challenge: finding, training, and retaining the skilled people who keep production consistent and reliable.

When a key operator leaves, production slips. When institutional knowledge walks out the door, quality suffers. When a manufacturer cannot staff its lines, your order is the one that gets delayed.

We decided a long time ago that the answer was not to accept that reality. It was to build our own pipeline.

What we built

Crestwood Creators is a fully employer-funded talent pipeline created and operated entirely by i2M. We identified high-potential students at Crestwood High School, one mile from our plant, and built a direct, hands-on path into skilled manufacturing careers. i2M designs the curriculum, funds the program in full, and hires its graduates. No tuition. No debt. A skilled career on day one.

That program launched in 2025. Twelve students have come through it so far.

We also partnered with Luzerne County Community College to connect higher education directly to manufacturing careers through a registered apprenticeship program, with another twelve active apprentices building the technical skills our operation depends on.

And because we know that good people sometimes cannot take good jobs due to circumstances that have nothing to do with their ability, we built childcare and transportation programs to remove those barriers entirely.

What this means for you

Every one of these programs exists for one reason: to ensure that the people building your product today are still here for your next order, and the order after that.

Workforce stability is supply chain stability. When you source from a manufacturer that invests in its people the way we do, you are not just buying film. You are buying the consistency that comes from a team that knows your spec, understands your quality requirements, and has been trained specifically to meet them.

That is what vertical integration really means. Not just controlling the process from compound to finished film, but controlling the human side of the operation with the same intentionality we bring to the technical side.

What the Secretary saw

Secretary Sonderling put it this way after his visit:

“You see a business that has been here for a long time using cutting-edge technology and training the local workforce. It’s exactly what I wanted to see. A partnership between high schools, community colleges, and industry all working together to make sure we could build these American-made products made by American workers.”

We are proud of that recognition. But we are prouder of the team that earned it and the customers who have trusted us long enough to see what that investment delivers.

If you are evaluating domestic sourcing options, or reassessing a supply chain that has been exposed to tariff risk or offshore disruption, we would welcome the conversation.

Resilient Supply Chains Start at Home

Global supply chains are under more pressure today than at any point in recent history. From pandemic-related shutdowns and port congestion to geopolitical instability and rising transportation costs, manufacturers across industries have been forced to confront a hard truth: offshoring introduces risk.

For decades, outsourcing production overseas was viewed as a cost-saving strategy. Lower labor costs and global sourcing promised efficiency. But recent disruptions have exposed the downside of that approach—long lead times, unpredictable delays, quality inconsistencies, and vulnerability to events far beyond a company’s control.

Today, the conversation has shifted. Resilient supply chains start at home, and U.S. manufacturing is no longer just a patriotic ideal—it is a strategic advantage.

This article explores why domestic manufacturing matters more than ever, the risks associated with offshoring, the economic and operational benefits of reshoring, and how companies like i2M are helping rebuild American industrial strength through U.S.-based polymer film manufacturing.

The Global Supply Chain Reality: What Changed?

The modern global supply chain was built on assumptions of stability: open borders, predictable transportation, and steady international cooperation. Those assumptions no longer hold.

In the last several years, manufacturers have faced:

Port backlogs and container shortages

Volatile shipping costs

Raw material shortages

Labor disruptions overseas

Foreign policy uncertainty and tariffs

Increased exposure to geopolitical conflict

Each of these issues compounds risk. When production is thousands of miles away, companies lose visibility and control over timelines, quality, and responsiveness.

Offshoring creates weak links—and when one link breaks, the entire supply chain feels the impact.

The Challenge: How Offshoring Weakens Supply Chains

Increased Risk of Disruption

When production moves overseas, supply chains become longer and more complex. Every additional step—from international shipping to customs clearance—introduces another point of failure.

Global disruptions don’t just cause delays; they ripple across entire industries. A single factory shutdown or port closure can halt production for weeks or months.

Transportation Delays and Rising Costs

International logistics are vulnerable to congestion, fuel price volatility, and capacity shortages. Ocean freight delays can derail production schedules, while air freight costs can quickly erase any labor savings gained offshore.

For manufacturers relying on just-in-time inventory models, these delays are especially damaging.

Reduced Quality Control

Distance makes oversight difficult. When production is offshore, quality issues are harder to identify and correct quickly. This can lead to higher scrap rates, inconsistent performance, and customer dissatisfaction.

Exposure to Policy and Trade Uncertainty

Tariffs, trade restrictions, and shifting foreign policy can instantly change cost structures. What once seemed like a low-cost sourcing option can become financially unsustainable overnight.

The Opportunity: Why Reshoring Builds Strength

Reshoring manufacturing is not simply about reducing risk—it is about building a stronger, more competitive industrial foundation.

Supply Chain Spend Is the Real Cost Driver

More than 50% of total manufacturing costs often reside in supply chain spend—not labor alone. Transportation, inventory carrying costs, delays, and inefficiencies add up quickly.

By keeping production domestic, companies can:

Shorten lead times

Reduce inventory buffers

Improve forecasting accuracy

Lower logistics and expediting costs

Faster Lead Times, Greater Agility

U.S.-based manufacturing allows companies to respond quickly to market changes, design updates, and customer demand fluctuations.

Shorter lead times mean faster product launches, quicker replenishment, and improved customer satisfaction—key advantages in competitive markets.

Improved Quality and Process Control

Domestic manufacturing enables closer collaboration between engineering, production, and quality teams. Issues can be identified and resolved in real time, improving consistency and performance.

This level of control is especially critical for high-performance materials, such as polymer films used in construction, interior surfaces, pool and spa applications, and industrial environments.

The Economic Impact of U.S. Manufacturing

Supporting American Jobs and Communities

Reshoring manufacturing directly supports American workers and strengthens local economies. Manufacturing jobs often have a multiplier effect—supporting additional roles in logistics, maintenance, engineering, and services.

Reinforcing Industrial Independence

Domestic production reduces reliance on foreign suppliers for critical materials and components. This independence is increasingly important as industries face global uncertainty and supply chain volatility.

Enhancing National and Economic Security

Manufacturing capacity is a strategic asset. From infrastructure materials to advanced polymers, maintaining domestic production capabilities helps protect against shortages and disruptions that could impact national security and economic stability.

Why Domestic Manufacturing Matters in Advanced Materials

Not all manufacturing is equal. For advanced materials like decorative and functional polymer films, precision, consistency, and performance are non-negotiable.

These materials are often used in demanding environments where failure is not an option—such as:

Kitchen and bath wall

Pool and spa liners

Construction and building materials

Interior decorative surfaces

Industrial and transportation applications

Domestic manufacturing ensures tighter control over formulation, extrusion, printing, and finishing processes—resulting in better-performing products and more reliable supply.

i2M’s Commitment to U.S.-Based Manufacturing

At i2M, domestic manufacturing is not a marketing claim—it is a core operating principle.

Built in the U.S. for Performance

i2M manufactures and prints high-performance polymer films entirely in the United States. By keeping production domestic, i2M provides partners with:

Greater supply chain control

Faster and more reliable lead times

Consistent quality and performance

Reduced exposure to global disruptions

From film extrusion and calendering to advanced printing and finishing, every step is engineered for speed, precision, and durability.

Innovation-Driven Manufacturing

Domestic production enables i2M to innovate quickly. Design, engineering, and manufacturing teams work closely together, accelerating development cycles and ensuring new solutions meet real-world performance demands.

This innovation-driven approach is critical for industries where aesthetics, durability, and compliance intersect.

From Loading Dock to Production Line

i2M’s U.S.-based operations allow for seamless coordination from raw material intake to finished product delivery. This end-to-end visibility reduces delays, improves responsiveness, and strengthens supply chain reliability for customers.

The Role of Domestic Manufacturing in Sustainability

While reshoring is often discussed in terms of economics and risk, it also plays a role in sustainability.

Shorter supply chains mean:

Reduced transportation emissions

Less packaging waste

Improved material efficiency

Greater accountability in production practices

Domestic manufacturers are also subject to stricter environmental and safety regulations, helping ensure responsible production standards.

Reshoring Is Not About Going Back—It’s About Moving Forward

Reshoring is sometimes framed as a return to the past. In reality, it represents a forward-looking strategy built on technology, automation, and innovation.

Modern U.S. manufacturing is:

Highly automated

Data-driven

Quality-focused

Innovation-led

Companies like i2M demonstrate that domestic production can be both competitive and cutting-edge—delivering performance without sacrificing reliability.

Building Resilient Supply Chains Together

The past several years have made one thing clear: supply chain resilience is no longer optional. Companies that prioritize control, transparency, and reliability are better positioned to succeed in an unpredictable world.

By choosing U.S.-based manufacturing partners, businesses can:

Reduce risk

Improve speed to market

Strengthen quality assurance

Support domestic industry

At i2M, resilient supply chains start at home. Through U.S.-based polymer film manufacturing, innovation-driven processes, and a commitment to performance, i2M helps partners build stronger, more secure supply chains—today and for the future.

Final Takeaway: Why U.S. Manufacturing Matters More Than Ever

Offshoring promised efficiency, but it delivered vulnerability. Reshoring offers something more valuable: stability, strength, and control.

U.S. manufacturing matters because it:

Reduces supply chain risk

Improves speed and reliability

Strengthens the American industrial base

Supports innovation and quality

Enhances long-term competitiveness

As industries adapt to a changing global landscape, one conclusion is clear: resilient supply chains start at home.
